Context

  • PSLV-C54 lifted off carrying an Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-06) or Oceansat as its primary payload and eight Thybolt nanosatellites. These are expected to be placed into sun-synchronous orbits.

PSLV-C54

  • The PSLV-C54 is the 56th mission of the Indian Space Research Organisation's Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
  • The PSLV C54 rocket has four stages; each one was self-contained, with its own propulsion system, thereby capable of functioning independently. The first and third stages used composite solid propellants, while the second and fourth stage use earth-storable liquid propellant.

EOS-06

  • EOS-06 is third generation satellite in the Oceansat series, which provides continued services of Oceansat-2 with enhanced payload capability. The satellite onboard carries four important payloads viz.
  1. Ocean Color Monitor (OCM-3),
  2. Sea Surface Temperature Monitor (SSTM),
  3. Ku-Band Scatterometer (SCAT-3),
  4. ARGOS.

Objective

  • The EOS-06 is envisaged to observe ocean color data, sea surface temperature and wind vector data to use in Oceanography, climatic and meteorological applications.
  • The satellite also supports value-added products such as potential fishing zone using chlorophyll, SST and wind speed and land based geophysical parameters.
