QS Global University Rankings
- India has improved In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject, with 44 courses provided in the nation's colleges and universities that are listed in the top 100 worldwide in their respective subject areas.
- According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Global University Rankings, 355 of the programmes (including 44 in the top 100) offered by Indian universities made it to the top 100. There were 299 entries in the last round, including 35 in the top 100.
- The rankings cover 54 academic subjects, and Indian universities perform well in the areas of computer science, chemistry, biology, business studies, and physics.
- Some of the programmes that appeared in the QS World University Rankings 2023 by subject include the sociology programme at JNU, which came in at number 68, and the mathematics programme at IIT Bombay, which came in at number 92.
- According to the QS, India produced 1.3 million academic articles between 2017 and 2022, ranking fourth internationally behind China (4.5 million), the United States (4.4 million), and the United Kingdom (1.4 million).
- 44% of the 355 programmes offered by Indian universities are from the 11 designated Institutions of Eminence (IoE).
Institutions of Eminence
- The Government of India launched the World Class Institutions Scheme in the year 2017.
- The objective was to promote 10 institutions each from the public and private categories to have world-class academic and research facilities and granted them the status of Institution of Eminence (IoE).
- Public institutions are to receive Rs 1,000 Cr over 5 years.
- No financial support for Private institutions, but they get Significant freedom from government regulations and institutional autonomy.
- The University Grants Commission (UGC) formed an empowered expert committee, and it was given the task of evaluating applications to select 20 Institutions of Eminence (10 public and 10 private institutions).
- Nominations have been made based on the Gopalaswami Expert Committee's (EEC) recommendations.
- Significance
- They can admit foreign students up to 30% of total seats.
- They can recruit foreign faculty up to 25% of faculty Strength.
- They can offer online Courses for up to 20% of their Programmes.
