News in Detail

The Union Cabinet allocated a total budget of ₹3,400 crore for the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) to boost growth in the livestock sector.

An extra ₹1,000 crore has been sanctioned as the Union government’s contribution for the period from 2021-22 to 2025-26.

The decision will directly support farmers and improve productivity in the livestock sector.

New activities introduced under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission

The Cabinet has introduced two significant new activities under the mission.

  • Providing one-time assistance of 35% of the capital cost for establishing heifer rearing centres, nurturing young female cattle, ensuring better breeding practices.
  • Encourage farmers to purchase cattle with high genetic merit to improve the quality of livestock across the country.

About Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM)

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) launched the Rashtriya Gokul Mission in December 2014 , as part of the broader National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development (NPBBD).

It aims to conserve indigenous cattle breeds by identifying and protecting native breeds like Gir, Sahiwal, Tharparkar, and Rathi.

Establish Gokul Grams, as centers for breeding and conservation. These centers actively engage in scientific breeding programs, maintain genetic purity, and provide training to farmers.

It supports the establishment of Breeder Societies and Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs).

It supports farmers by providing financial assistance, training, and resources. It also rewards farmers who achieve excellence in livestock management through awards like the "Gopal Ratna" and "Kamdhenu" awards.
