Canada has introduced the Rural Community Immigration Class (RCIC) program to offer opportunities for students to settle in the country by committing to living and working in designated rural communities.
It is a new programme launched by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in December 2024.
It aims to address labour shortages and promote growth in smaller rural communities by offering foreign nationals, including international students, the opportunity to apply for Permanent Residency (PR) if they commit to living and working in these designated areas.
Indian students make up the largest share of international students in Canada, accounting for nearly 40%. Many face challenges in securing PR due to increased competition and stricter rules. The RCIC scheme presents an opportunity for students to settle in Canada, mainly in rural areas where there is less competition.
It addresses labour shortages in rural areas, promotes population growth, and supports economic growth in smaller communities. By attracting international talent, particularly those already studying or working in Canada, the scheme encourages long-term growth and sustainability in these regions.
