Context :

  • Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of India’s most unique sanctuaries because it is the first manmade wildlife sanctuary of india.
  • It is situated in the Sangli district of Maharashtra.
  • The sanctuary also has a large number of deer. 536 Sambar and 295 Chital (spotted deer) are making it one of the sanctuaries with the highest deer populations among manmade wildlife areas.

Key Facts:

  • The sanctuary is an artificially created forest without a constant water supply.
  • Here , Most of the animals were introduced artificially.
  • It is also named after the ancient Sagareshwar temple. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • The sanctuary has several temples.

  • The sanctuary has southern dry mixed deciduous & southern thorn forests.
  • Major trees include Tamarind, Neem, Eucalyptus, Acacia, Agave, & Khair.

Fauna (Animals):

  • Deer species: Sambar, Chital (Spotted Deer), Muntjac, & Blackbuck.
  • The sanctuary has a high deer population with 536 Sambar & 295 Chital.
  • Other animals: Wild boar, Peacocks, & small carnivores like Hyena, Fox, & Porcupines.
