Context:

The Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Steel highlighted the implementation status of the SAMARTH Udyog Bharat 4.0 initiative in the Rajya Sabha

What is the SAMARTH Udyog Bharat 4.0 initiative?

It is a Ministry of Heavy Industries initiative to improve competitiveness in the capital goods sector. 

It involves the establishment of experiential and demonstration centres forIndustry 4.0 to raise awareness among Indian manufacturing industries. 

The initiative aims to engage manufacturers, vendors, and customers as key stakeholders.

Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0)

It is a digitalization era that uses advanced technologies to enhance efficiency, productivity, and flexibility in manufacturing and supply chains.

Key technologies include the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Big Data and AI analytics, cloud computing, augmented reality (AR), additive manufacturing (3D printing), autonomous robots, simulation/digital twins, and cybersecurity. These technologies help manufacturers optimize supply chains, streamline operations, improve production, and make factories more efficient and productive.

Cybersecurity is crucial due to increased connectivity and the use of Big Data.

SAMARTH Centres

The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has launched the Scheme for "Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector," which includes the establishment of four Smart Advanced Manufacturing and Rapid Transformation Hub (SAMARTH) Centres. The centres are:

  • Centre for Industry 4.0 (C4i4) Lab in Pune
  • IITD-AIA Foundation for Smart Manufacturing at IIT Delhi.
  • I-4.0 India at IISc, Bengaluru.
  • Smart Manufacturing Demo and Development Cell, CMTI, Bengaluru.

The Hub and Spoke model has been approved for the establishment of ten Industry 4.0 experience centres across India.

What role does SAMARTH Centres play in Industry 4.0 adoption in India?

Organizing awareness seminars, workshops, and knowledge-sharing events on Industry 4.0.

Providing training to industries to create awareness about Industry 4.0.

Offering consultancy in areas such as IoT hardware, software development, and data analytics.

Incubation support for start-ups, including MSMEs, to help them adopt smart manufacturing technologies.

The SAMARTH Centres do not provide financial assistance to any industry or MSME seeking to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies. It focuses on training, awareness, and consulting services.
