Context: The Indian State of Forest Report, has revealed that the Ranthambore and Sariska tiger reserves in Rajasthan have registered a decrease in their forest cover over the last decade.
Reasons attributed to shrinking of forest cover are
- encroachments for agriculture
- unchecked grazing of animals over extensive areas
- tourism and forest fires
- spread of the invasive shrubs of Prosopis juliflora
Sariska tiger reserves
- Located in:
- It is the first reserve in the world with successfully relocated tigers.
- It is an important biodiversity area in the Northern Aravalli leopard and wildlife corridor.
- It is a part of the Aravalli Range and the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forests ecoregion.
Ranthambore National Park
- Located in: Rajasthan.
- It is bounded to the north by the Banas River and to the south by the Chambal River.
- It is named after the historic Ranthambore Fort, which lies within the park.
