Schemes in the News: GREAT and Swavalambini

About GREAT

The 10th Empowered Programme Committee (EPC) meeting under the National Technical Textiles Mission recently approved four start-ups under the ‘Grant for Research & Entrepreneurship across Aspiring Innovators in Technical Textiles (GREAT)’ scheme.

Each start-up will receive a grant of approximately INR 50 lakhs. These start-ups focus on strategic areas such as Medical Textiles, Industrial Textiles, and Protective Textiles.

The committee allocated a grant of approximately INR 6.5 crores to three educational institutes, including IIT Indore and NIT Patna, to introduce courses in Technical Textiles.

  • These courses will cover areas like Geotextiles, Geosynthetics, Protective Textiles, and Sports Textiles, integrating them into the institutes’ curricula.

The committee approved 12 skill development courses across domains such as Medical Textiles, Protective Textiles, Mobile Textiles, and Agriculture Textiles. These courses, developed by three Textile Research Associations (SITRA, NITRA, and SASMIRA), aim to provide training across the entire value chain of technical textiles.

About Swavalambini

The Swavalambini Women Entrepreneurship Programme is an initiative launched by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) in collaboration with NITI Aayog to empower female students in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the northeastern states.

It aims to encourage entrepreneurial aspirations among women by providing them with essential resources, mentorship, and structured training to transform their ideas into sustainable businesses.

Objectives of the initiative:

Introducing female students to entrepreneurship as a viable career option through the Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme (EAP) and equipping them with business skills via the Women Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP).

Offering six months of mentorship and handholding support to help participants refine their business ideas and access funding opportunities.

Upskilling faculty members through a 5-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) to enable them to effectively mentor students in entrepreneurship.

Celebrating successful women entrepreneurs emerging from the program through the Award to Rewards Initiative, inspiring the next generation of female business leaders.

The Swavalambini Programme aligns closely with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by promoting an entrepreneurship-driven curriculum and fostering skill integration, industry collaboration, and hands-on experience.
