The International Labour Organisation (ILO) released the Social Dialogue Report.
According to the report, countries' compliance with freedom of association and collective bargaining rights declined by 7% between 2015 and 2022. This decline is mainly due to increased violations of civil liberties and worker and employer bargaining rights.
It recommended governments to respect labour rights and provide labour administrations and social partners with the resources and technical capabilities required to participate in peak-level social dialogue (PLSD).
Peak-Level Social Dialogue (PLSD)It refers to processes in which governments, employers' organizations, and workers' organizations collaborate to discuss and resolve labour, economic, and social issues. These processes can be bipartite, involving only employers and workers to reach collective agreements, or tripartite, including the government for broader consultations on national or sectoral issues. |
Social dialogue is important for achieving a balance between economic development and social progress.
It contributes to the inclusive and equitable transition to low-carbon economies and digital innovations.
It enables collaboration among governments, employers, and workers to create equitable workplaces that contribute to both economic growth and social justice.
International Labour Organization (ILO)It was established in 1919 as part of the League of Nations, making it one of the UN's first and oldest specialized agencies. It has 187 member states and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It is the only UN agency with a tripartite structure, including representatives from governments, employers, and workers to discuss and approve all standards, policies, and programmes. It received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969 for promoting international fraternity and peace, improving worker justice, and providing technical assistance to developing countries. |
