Recently it was announced that a complete annotated version of the works of C. Subramania Bharati will be released by the Prime Minister.
Born in 1882 in Tamil Nadu, Subramania Bharati was an Indian writer, poet, journalist, teacher, Indian independence activist, social reformer, and polyglot.
He was given the title ‘Bharati’ for his poetry and was also bestowed the title ‘Mahakavi Bharati’ (The great poet Bharati).
He fought against child marriage, caste system, and colonial rule, and advocated for the emancipation of women, social reform, and religious reform.
His works were based on themes like politics, society, and spirituality. Some of his major works include Panjali Sabatham, Kannan Paatu, Kuyil Paatu, Paapa Paatu, Chinnanchriu Kiliye, etc.
Two of his most important works are Tamil translations of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and Bhagavad Gita.
Subramania Bharati was the first poet whose literature was nationalized in 1949.
Bharati’s poetry expressed progressive and reformist ideas. He wrote many patriotic songs during the Indian independence movement.
The Government of Tamil Nadu renovated the house where he spent the last years of his life and also the houses where he was born and lived in are maintained as memorial houses.
In 1987, the Subramanyam Bharti Award was constituted to award contributions to literature and it is awarded by the Ministry of Education every year.
In 2021, the Government of Tamil Nadu instituted a yearly ‘Bharati Young Poet Award’.
