Context
- Union Minister for Environment Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav addressed the valedictory session at the "Conference on Environmental Diversity and Environmental Jurisprudence: National and International Perspective" held at Chandigarh University, Mohali.
- The minister calls for the need to strike balance between development on one side and a pollution-free environment on the other and thus emphasizes ‘sustainable development.
About Sustainable Development
- The development which satisfies the needs of the present generation without affecting the needs of the future generation is called sustainable development.
- Sustainable development (SD) calls for concerted efforts toward building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and the planet.
- There are three core elements of sustainable development:
- Environmental sustainability
- Social sustainability
- Economic sustainability
About Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- To bring sustainable development into the mainstream United Nations (UN) launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and SDGs.
- This universal, integrated and transformative agenda aims to spur actions that will end poverty and build a more sustainable world over the next 15 years.
- There are 17 goals and 169 targets specific targets to be achieved by 2030. Reaching the goals requires action on all fronts – governments, businesses, civil society and people everywhere all have a role to play.
- SDGs are not legally binding.
