PRACTICE QUESTION Q: Consider the following statements about National Clean Air Programme: 1.The NCAP aims to bring a 50% reduction in pollution levels from PM2.5 particles by 2024. 2.Non-attainment cities are those that have consistently failed to meet NAAQS for over five years. Which of the above statements is/are incorrect? a) 1 only b) 2 only c) Both 1 and 2 d) Neither 1 nor 2
Answer: a Explanation: 1st statement is incorrect: Initially, the NCAP aimed for a 20-30% reduction in PM10 and PM2.5 pollution levels by 2024, compared to 2017 levels. However, in September 2022, the government revised the target to a 40% reduction by 2026. 2nd statement is correct: Non-attainment cities are those that have consistently failed to meet National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for over five years. NAAQS are the established standards for ambient air quality concerning various pollutants notified by the CPCB under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. These include PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, CO, NH3, Ozone, Lead, Benzene, Benzo-Pyrene, Arsenic, and Nickel. |
