Context :

  • Recently, the Defence Ministry has signed a $248 million contract with Rosoboronexport (ROE) Russia.
  • The deal focuses on procuring 1000 horsepower (HP) engines for T-72 tanks in completely finished, completely knocked down & semi knocked down conditions.

Purpose of the Upgrade:

  • The T 72 tanks currently have a 780 HP engine. Now these will be upgraded to 1000 HP engines.
  • This aims to increase the performance & efficiency of the tank fleet of the Indian Army.

About the T-72 Tank:

  • Design: The T 72 is a Soviet designed main battle tank. It was introduced in 1971 & it has been a key part of many countries’ armored forces.
  • Manufacturing: In India T-72 is locally manufactured & upgraded at the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi.

Tank Specifications:

  • Mobility: The T-72 tank is known for its mobility with a smooth running 780 HP engine that minimises vibration & smoke.
  • Armament:
      • 125mm D 81 smoothbore gun.
      • 62mm co axial machine gun.
      • 7mm air defense machine gun.
      • The tank carries 44 rounds of 125mm ammunition, with 22 rounds stored in an automatic loading carousel.

  • It is Equipped with high accuracy laying and sighting material to improve targeting & gunfire precision.
  • It ensures a high effective rate of gunfire. It enhances the tank’s combat effectiveness.
