Context :

  • Tavasya is the last of 4 Krivak-class stealth frigates.
  • It was launched on March 22, 2025 at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).
  • This is an important progress in India's efforts towards naval self reliance & defence production capabilities.
  • Tavasya is the 2nd ship under construction at GSL based on a technology transfer agreement with Russia.

About Krivak-Class Stealth Frigates

Background

  • India-Russia Agreement: there was an agreement InterGovernmental Agreement (IGA) between India Russia in October 2016. It was for the construction of 4 additional Krivak class stealth frigates.
    • 2 ships were imported directly from Russia.
    • 2 ships are being manufactured at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) under the technology transfer

  • Maximum Speed: 28 knots
  • Engines: it is powered by Zorya Mashproekt (Ukraine)

Details of Ships

  • Triput: This is the 1st ship manufactured in India. It was launched in July 2024. and it is set for delivery in 2026.
  • Tushil: This is the 1st Russian manufactured ship. It was commissioned on December 9, 2024. It is now based in Karwar.
  • Tamal: This is 2nd Russian manufactured frigate in advanced trials. It is expected to be commissioned by June 2025.
  • Tavasya: it is expected to be the last warship built under foreign license because India is transitioning to indigenous warship construction.

Significance

  • The launch of Tavasya emphasises self reliance in the Indian navy & growing capability in indigenous defence production.
  • It is the end of the technology transfer phase with Russia. Because it is the beginning of India's full transition towards building indigenous warships.
