Context:

• Recently, GE Aerospace has started delivering F404-IN20 jet engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Tejas LCA Mk1A fighter jets after delays.
• The first engine shipped on March 26, 2025. But it will arrive in India in April 2025.
• HAL aims to deliver 12 Tejas Mk1A jets in 2025. It is also increasing production to 24 jets per year.
• The Indian Air Force (IAF) operates 31 fighter squadrons far below the required 42.5 squadrons.
• So it is highlighting the urgency for these deliveries.

About Tejas LCA Mk1A :

• Tejas LCA Mk1A is an upgraded variant of India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. It is developed by HAL.
• It shows 40 improvements over the Mk1 variant. It is enhancing:
  • Combat capabilities
  • Survivability
  • Operational efficiency

Key Upgrades in Tejas Mk1A:

• Advanced Avionics:
  • It is equipped with Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar:
    • Israeli EL/M-2052 AESA Radar
    • Indigenously developed Uttam AESA Radar
  • Enhanced Electronic Warfare Systems:
    • It has Unified Electronic Warfare Suite (UEWS)
    • Advanced Self Protection Jammer Pod for improved survivability.
  • Digital Fly-by-Wire System:
    • It is an Upgraded Flight Control Computer (DFCC Mk1A) for enhanced maneuverability & stability.
  • Weapons Capability:
    • 9 hardpoints capable of carrying:
      • Beyond Visual Range (BVR) missiles
      • Air to Air & Air to Ground missiles
      • Advanced Short Range Air to Air Missiles (ASRAAM)
        
        
    • Operational Efficiency:
      • Reduced weight & improved maintainability.
      • Faster turnaround times during missions.

About the F404-IN20 Jet Engine:

• It is manufactured by GE Aerospace. F404-IN20 engine powers the Tejas LCA Mk1A.
• Engine Features:
  • High thrust variant of the F404 engine family.
  • Higher flow fans & single crystal turbine blades.
  • Designed components for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
• The F404-IN20 helped Tejas to achieve Mach 1.1 during its 1st test flight in 2008.

Significance:

• These upgrades to Tejas Mk 1A will enhance its operational capability & sustainability.
• Moreover, It will meet India's immediate defence requirements while also giving a boost to its indigenous fighter jet programme.
