The Thadou Tribe leaders issued a 10-point declaration to protect the tribe's distinct identity and heritage in the midst of Manipur's ethnic crisis.
The Thadou Convention in Guwahati (Assam) was attended by Thadou tribe leaders and delegates from all over the country and abroad.
They issued a 10-point declaration and a 9-point resolution highlighting the tribe's distinct ethnic identity, which includes its own language, culture, traditions, and history.
They announced the formation of several councils including; Thadou Inpi Mizoram, Thadou Chiefs' Council, Thadou Human Rights Advocacy, Thadou Academic Society (TAS), and Thadou Elders' (Upalom) Association (TEA).
They agreed to establish the new body Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM), in accordance with the Thadou Inpi Constitution, as a unified top body of the Thadou tribe in Manipur.
They call on everyone to correctly identify Thadou as Thadou, with no prefix or suffix, and stop referring to them as Kuki.
The Thadou Convention declaration stated "Thadou is a separate, independent group from Kuki. Thadou is one of the original 29 native/indigenous tribes of Manipur, that were duly recognized as independent Scheduled Tribes of Manipur under the 1956 Presidential Order of the Government of India"
The leaders and delegates have demanded that the Thadou tribe be recognized as a separate and distinct Scheduled Tribe in Assam, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
Thadou people live in Northeast India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh.
According to the 2011 census, India has 229,340 Thadou people. The vast majority (97.6%) live in Manipur, they are the largest single tribe in the state, approximately 19% of the Scheduled Tribes. There are also many Thadou speakers in Meghalaya and Assam.
