The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and its media partners from 30 countries have received 182 gigabytes of leaked data from Uber files.
Details
The Uber data included 124,000 records from the 2013-17 period.
The leaked data included:
Internal company emails.
WhatsApp messages.
Over the years, Uber has faced severe media scrutiny.
The Uber Files showed that the company’s top executives reacted in a poor manner over the allegation of rape by an Uber driver in New Delhi in 2014. The executives blamed faulty background checks of drivers by Indian government officials.
The leaked data also indicated the manner in which Uber increased its closeness among the bureaucracy and political class to influence policy.
In India, with approximately 6 lakh driver-partners and a presence in over 100 cities and towns, Uber has created significant earning and employment opportunities.
