According to the Unified District Information System for Education Plus report, student enrolment in 2023-24 dropped by over a crore compared to previous years.
It is one of India’s largest Management Information Systems, initiated by the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL), Ministry of Education.
It collects data from over 14.72 lakh schools, 98.08 lakh teachers, and 24.8 crore children across the country.
It collects and maintains detailed information about schools, teachers, enrollment, infrastructure, and other educational data via an online portal.
Schools use a Data Capture Format (DCF) to enter their data, which is then validated at the Block, District, and State levels before being certified by the State Project Director (SPD).
It is the most trusted and comprehensive database for school education in India.
Each school is provided with a unique login ID and password to enter data on the UDISE+ portal.The Head Teacher or Head Master of each school collects the data, which is then verified in a 3-stage process at the Block/Cluster, District, and State levels. Once the data is validated, it is certified by the State Project Director (SPD) to ensure that only approved and accurate information is available on the portal.
The UDISE+ report for 2023-2024 highlights a drop in student enrolment. The total number of students enrolled in 2023-2024 was 24.8 crore, down from 25.18 crore in 2022-2023.This year marks the first significant decline in enrolment since the pandemic, with a decrease of over 1 crore students compared to previous years. The average enrollment over the last five years has been around 26.36 crore.
In the 2023-2024 report, boys account for 51.9% of enrolments, while girls make up 48.1%.
The minority representation in total enrolment stands at about 20%, with the majority of minority students being Muslims (79.6%), followed by Christians (10%), Sikhs (6.9%), Buddhists (2.2%), Jains (1.3%), and Parsis (0.1%).
In 2023-2024, there were 4.47 crore Scheduled Caste (SC) students enrolled, compared to 4.59 crore in 2022-2023.
For Other Backward Classes (OBC), 11.2 crore students enrolled in 2023-2024, slightly down from 11.45 crore in the previous year.
The report shows that over 90% of schools now have basic amenities like electricity and gender-specific toilets.
Advanced facilities such as functional desktops, internet access, and ramps with railings still face significant gaps.
Only 57.2% of schools have functional computers, 53.9% have internet access, and 52.3% are equipped with ramps.
The report highlights the need for improvements in accessibility and technological readiness in schools.
