The ballot for this year’s United Kingdom-India Young Professionals Scheme (YPS) will open next week.

About the UK-India Young Professionals Scheme (YPS)

It is a reciprocal program allowing young Indian and British nationals aged 18-30 to live, work, and study in the other country for up to two years.

It was launched in February 2023, as part of the Migration and Mobility Agreement that the two countries signed in 2021.

While there is a ballot system for Indians to apply to live in the UK, with a cap of 3,000 announced this year, there is no such ballot for British citizens to apply under the scheme.

To qualify for the YPS, applicants must:

  1. Be Indian citizens aged 18-30.
  2. Hold a qualification equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher.
  3. Demonstrate savings of at least £2,530 to support themselves in the UK.
  4. Have a clean criminal record.
  5. Be first-time participants in the scheme.

YPS different from other UK work visas

No Sponsorship Required: Unlike skilled worker visas, the YPS does not require a certificate of sponsorship from an employer.

Flexibility: Participants can seek employment or self-employment after arriving in the UK.

Duration: The YPS allows a stay of up to two years, but it is non-extendable and does not permit dependent children.

Savings Requirement: Applicants need £2,530 in savings, lower than the £1,270 required for other work visas.

Application process

Entering the Ballot: Applicants must first enter the ballot, which opens on February 18, 2025.

Online Application: Selected applicants complete an online form and submit required documents, including proof of education, savings, and a valid passport.

Biometrics Appointment: Applicants provide fingerprints and photographs at a UK Visa Application Centre.

Visa Decision: The UK Home Office processes the application and notifies the applicant of the decision.

Travel to the UK: Successful applicants receive a visa sticker in their passport, allowing them to enter the UK.
