Recently the Union Minister of Culture and Tourism conferred the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puruskar for the year 2022 and 2023 to 82 young artists.
The UBKUP award was instituted by the Sangeet Natak Academy in 2006 in the name of Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan for young performing art practitioners.
Eligibility: Upto the age of 40 years
It is given annually to encourage outstanding young artists in the fields of music, dance, drama, folk and tribal arts, and puppetry.
The award includes Rs. 25000/- cash, a plaque, and an angavastram.
Bharat Ratna Ustad Bismillah Khan was a popular Shehnai Player.
He played shehnai at the Red Fort on August 15, 1947, marking India’s Independence.
He also played Shehnai at India’s first Republic Day celebration in 1950.
He is known for his devotion to Indian classical music and his ability to blend Hindustani classical ragas with the unique tonal quality of the shehnai.
He represented the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb (the syncretic culture of Hindu-Muslim unity) through his music and persona.
He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2001, becoming the third classical musician to receive it, and was also awarded with Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.
Khan was the first Indian to be invited to perform at the Lincoln Centre Hall in the United States of America.
