The Vadhavan greenfield port, which is under construction near Dahanu in Maharashtra, will double India’s container trade from the current levels upon completion.
It is an all-weather Greenfield deep draft port in Palghar District, Maharashtra, and is being developed under the PM Gati Shakti program using a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Maharashtra Maritime Board.
Built on the landlord model through PPP, the port will feature regulatory oversight by the Port Authority, while private entities manage operations.
Construction is planned in two phases, creating a capacity of 23.2 million TEUs with a 20-meter draft for handling mega vessels.
It is a Greenfield project, developed from scratch on previously undeveloped land. The project aligns with India's infrastructure growth strategy to boost trade and connectivity.
This will be the world’s top 10 port once both phases are completed in 2034. By 2029, four terminals will be completed and five terminals will be added by 2034.
The project with an outlay of ₹76,000 crore is being constructed by Vadhavan Port Project Limited (VPPL), a joint venture between JNPA and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), with a shareholding of 74% and 26%, respectively.
