Context:

  • Recently, India has successfully flight tested the Vertically Launched Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VLSRSAM).
  • Testing was done from a defense test facility off the Odisha coast.

About VLSRSAM:

  • The VLSRSAM is an indigenously developed Short Range Surface to Air Missile (SRSAM).
  • It is developed by Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • Purpose: It is a quick reaction missile. It is designed to neutralize various aerial threats at close ranges including sea skimming targets.

Key Features of VLSRSAM:

  • Development & Capability:
    • It was Initially designed for the Indian Navy with a strike range of 40 km.
    • The missile range has now been extended to 80 km.
    • Future Use: It is also being developed for the Indian Air Force to protect air bases.
  • Missile Specifications:
    • Diameter: 178 mm
    • Wingspan: 508 mm
    • Length:93 meters
    • Weight: 170 kg
    • Propellant: Solid propellant
  • Performance:
    • Maximum Speed: Mach 4.5
    • Maximum Altitude: 16 km
  • Guidance System:
    • Mid course phase: it uses a fiber optic gyroscope based inertial guidance mechanism.
    • Terminal phase: it also utilises active radar homing for precise targeting.
  • Weapon Control System (WCS):
    • The missile is part of an integrated missile & weapon control system (WCS).
    • Multi missile configuration: It can hold multiple missiles in a twin quad pack canister.

Significance:

  • The VLSRSAM enhances India's defence capabilities for quick reaction to aerial threats at close ranges. and it is suitable for use by both the Navy & the Air Force further enhancing its versatility.
