Winter bird monitoring programme

Context: The Winter Bird Monitoring Programme for 2021-22 has recorded the presence of 203 bird species, including 53 non-resident species, in the districts of Mysuru, Mandya, and Chamarajanagar.

About Winter Bird Monitoring Programme:

  • It was initiated in 1987 in Mysore.
  • Under this programme, Winter migratory and local water-fowls have been observed and recorded in and around Mysore during the 2nd week of January for every year.
  • Valuable data generated by this is made use for conservation by different agencies, meanwhile birders get to understand the birding life in the region.

Key findings:

  • Data indicates that 203 species were recorded this year.
  • Bird count: 34,361 birds of all species underlining the sheer diversity of birds.
  • Most abundant species: Northern Shoveler, Spot-billed Pelicans, Asian Openbills and Indian Cormorants and Bar-headed Goose.
