YEMEN AND UAE

Context

  • A suspected drone attack on Monday in Abu Dhabi, the capital of UAE, caused multiple explosions in which three people were killed. The Shia Houthi rebels of Yemen have claimed responsibility for the attack.

 

Yemen

  • Location: Yemen is situated in south-western corner of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. It is located in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres of the Earth. Yemen is strategically located at the entrance of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. The strait links the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea via the Gulf of Aden.
  • Borders: It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Guardafui Channel to the south, and Oman to the east.
  • Islands: Red Sea islands, including the Hanish Islands, Kamaran, and Perim, as well as Socotra in the Arabian Sea, belong to Yemen. Jabal al-Tair Island had a volcanic eruption in 2007. Socotra faces the Guardafui Channel and the Somali Sea.
  • Geographic divisions: the coastal plains in the west, the western highlands, the eastern highlands, and the Rub' al Khali desert in the east.
  • Capital: Sana´a is the largest city in Yemen and the capital of the country.
  • Major Cities: Sana'a', Aden, Al-Hudaydah

Houthi movement

  • About: The Houthi movement is an Islamist political and armed movement that emerged from Saada in north Yemen in the 1990s.
  • Leadership: The Houthi movement is a predominately Zaidi Shia force, whose leadership is drawn largely from the Houthi tribe.
  • Aim: The movement's expressed goals include combating economic underdevelopment and political marginalization in Yemen while seeking greater autonomy for Houthi-majority regions of the country.

 

UAE

  • Location: United Arab Emirates is is located on the north east edge of the Arabian Peninsula. It is situated in the Northern and Eastern Hemispheres of the Earth. It is in a strategic location slightly south of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital transit point for world crude oil.
  • Borders: It shares borders with Oman and Saudi Arabia, while having maritime borders in the Persian Gulf with Qatar and Iran.
  • Geographic divisions: Outer reaches of the Rub' Al Khali Desert stretch into the country. The Hajar Mountains dominate the landscape in the northeast. Jabal Yibir, the country's highest point, is located there.
