Context: India, ASEAN approve digital work plan to combat use of stolen mobile handsets

 

Key outcomes of the 2nd ASEAN Digital Ministers' (ADGMIN) Meeting:

  • It approved the India-ASEAN Digital Work Plan 2022.
  • The work plan includes system for combating the use of stolen and counterfeit mobile handsets, wifi access network interface for nationwide public internet, the capacity building and knowledge sharing in emerging areas in the field of information and communication technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, advanced satellite communication, cyber forensics, etc.

 

What is ADGMIN?

  • It is an annual meeting of telecom ministers of 10 ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) countries —Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam—and dialogue partner countries—Australia, Canada, China, EU, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia, UK and US.

 

About ASEAN

  • It is officially the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
  • It is an economic unioncomprising 10 member states in Southeast Asia. There are: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam.
  • It promotes intergovernmental cooperation and facilitates economic, political, security, military, educational, and sociocultural integrationbetween its members and other countries in Asia.

 

ASEAN's Objectives:

  • To accelerate economic growth and through that social progress and cultural development.
  • To promote regional peace and stability based on the rule of law and the principle of United Nations charter.
  • In 2003, ASEAN moved along the path of the European Union by agreeing to establish an ASEAN community comprising three pillars: the ASEAN security community, the ASEAN economic community, and the ASEAN socio-cultural community.
