The group, named after ancient Meitei warriors, boasts estimated armed cadre strength of around 2,000 and support from several thousand volunteers.
• The group played a visible role in the violence last May, engaging in clashes with Kukis, looting arms from state armouries, and defending Meitei villages. Multiple FIRs implicated Arambai Tenggol in clashes with Kuki militants in Moreh.

Political Significance

• Arambai Tenggol has interacted with political leaders, including a claimed meeting with the Chief Minister and a social media post by a Rajya Sabha MP showing the group taking an "oath" at his residence.
• The group's involvement in violence against Kukis has garnered support in the Imphal Valley, contributing to its clout. Leaders, including politicians, seek association with the group amid the low credibility of Manipur politicians.

Security and Public Support

• By positioning itself in clashes and defending against Kuki attacks, Arambai Tenggol has gained tremendous public support. The group uses nationalistic rhetoric, emphasizes ancient Meitei culture, and talks about protecting the Sanamahism religion.
