Context: The Central government has offered support for development of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in the State through the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL).

Background:

  • The EESL has already established 80 EV charging stations in the State and supplied 300 e-cars to various government departments as part of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and EV (FAME) scheme.
  • The transport sector accounts for 18% of total energy consumption in the country. In energy terms, it translates to an estimated 94 Million Tonnes of Oil Equivalent (MTOE).
  • If India were to follow the current trends of energy consumption, it would require an estimated 200 MTOE of energy supply annually by 2030 to meet the burgeoning demand of the transport sector.

  • It is 100% government-owned, a joint venture of state-owned NTPC Limited, Power Finance Corporation, REC Limited and POWERGRID.
  • EESL was formed under India's Ministry of Power to facilitate energy efficiency projects.
  • Projects include Unnat Joyti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA), Street Light National Programme, National Energy Efficient fan distribution program, Efficient Buildings program.
  • EESL is also implementing the world’s largest agricultural demand-side management program, by distributing efficient smart-controlled pumps to farmers free of cost, to allow remote operation and monitoring.
