Fresh push for pedal power in smart cities
India Cycles 4 Change Challenge
- Challenge for cities to come up with quick solutions for promoting cycling.
- Launched by Smart City Mission of Ministry
- Set up community-led cycle rental schemes.
- Create cycling networks using low-cost methods like pop-up cycle lanes and non-motorised zones.
- Apart from the 100 cities implementing the Smart Cities Mission, cities with a population of over 5 lakh and capitals of States and Union Territories can apply.
- 11 cities will be shortlisted in October 2020.
- Will receive ₹1 crore award and guidance from national and international experts to further scale-up the initiatives in stage two.
- Supported by the India Programme of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy.
About Smart City Mission:
- GoI launched 100 smart cities missions in 2015.
- Implementation by Ministry of Urban Development.
Strategy of Smart City:
- city improvement (retrofitting),
- city renewal (redevelopment)
- city extension (greenfield development)
- Pan-city initiative in which Smart Solutions are applied covering larger parts of the city.
Methods to select:
- ‘Challenge’ or competition method to select cities for funding and using a strategy of area-based development.
- States and ULBs will play a key supportive role.
