Fresh push for pedal power in smart cities

 India Cycles 4 Change Challenge

  • Challenge for cities to come up with quick solutions for promoting cycling.
  • Launched by Smart City Mission of Ministry
  • Set up community-led cycle rental schemes.
  • Create cycling networks using low-cost methods like pop-up cycle lanes and non-motorised zones.
  • Apart from the 100 cities implementing the Smart Cities Mission, cities with a population of over 5 lakh and capitals of States and Union Territories can apply.
  • 11 cities will be shortlisted in October 2020.
  • Will receive ₹1 crore award and guidance from national and international experts to further scale-up the initiatives in stage two.
  • Supported by the India Programme of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy.

About Smart City Mission:

  • GoI launched 100 smart cities missions in 2015.
  • Implementation by Ministry of Urban Development.

Strategy of Smart City:

  • city improvement (retrofitting),
  • city renewal (redevelopment)
  • city extension (greenfield development)
  • Pan-city initiative in which Smart Solutions are applied covering larger parts of the city.

Methods to select:

  • ‘Challenge’ or competition method to select cities for funding and using a strategy of area-based development.
  • States and ULBs will play a key supportive role.
