Context: Cabinet approves Secretariat for 2023 G20 summit.


Other details:


·    Secretariat role:
o   It will look after the affairs of organizing the G20 summit in 2023.
o   The Secretariat will be functional till February 2024.
o   It will handle work relating to substantive/knowledge/content, technical, media, security and logistical aspects of India’s G20 Presidency.
o   It will be manned by officers and staff from the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and other relevant line Ministries/Departments and domain knowledge experts.
o   It will enable long term capacity building, including knowledge and expertise, for India’s leadership on global issues in multilateral fora.


    Apex committee:

o   An “apex committee” with Prime Minister at the head, and the Ministers of Finance, Home and External Affairs, will provide guidance to the planning.
o   The committee will also include Commerce and Industry, who is the current the “G20 Sherpa” conducting international negotiations at the level of G20.

   India’s G20 Presidency:

India will steer the international body as its President from December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2023.

  • G20 countries have come together to better prepare for the future.
  • As a founding member of the G20, India has used the platform to raise issues of vital importance and those that impact on the most vulnerable around the world.
  • Apart from the G7 countries, the G20 comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, and Turkey.
  • Together, the G20 countries make up around 80% of the world’s economy and two-thirds of the world’s population.
