Gen. Rawat pushes for Quad

Context: India wants the Quad to become a system to “ensure freedom of navigation (FoN) and freedom of navigation operations (FONOPS)” in the Indian Ocean and around the threat of a combined challenge from Pakistan and China on two fronts, and cautioning Pakistan against taking any advantage of the tensions with China.

“Quad is concerned, is a good arrangement which will ensure that the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and all other oceans around... there is complete FoN without fear of any other nation singularly trying to dominate the oceans,”

  • The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD, also known as the Quad) is an informal strategic forum. The grouping of four democracies –India, Australia, US and Japan– known as the quadrilateral security dialogue or quad, was first mooted by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2007. 
  • With the aim to counter China’s aggressive behaviour in the Indo-Pacific region, India, Australia, US and Japan, formed the “quadrilateral” coalition on November 12, 2017,
