Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has initiated 12 pilot shelter homes and provided financial assistance to community based organizations (CBOs) for setting up of these shelter homes 'Garima Greh' for Transgender persons.
Present Status in India:
According to the 2011 Census, total population of transgenders is 4.8 lakh but only 30,000 are registered with the Election Commission.
However, estimates suggest that there are 50-60 lakhs transgenders in India but most keep it a secret to avoid discrimination.
As per 2011 census, there were 54,854 transgender children below the age of six.
On the educational front, the pass percentage of transgender persons of class 10 has decreased by 15.79% and those of class 12 has decreased by 16.66 %.
On health front, prevalence of HIV and STI among transgender populations in India, lack of awareness and institutional discrimination constitute the biggest challenge.
Mental health needs of the transgender community is barely addressed in the current HIV programs. Available evidence suggest the need to address alcohol and substance use among transgender communities.
