Context: Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles has called upon the Indian community in Australia to celebrate the International Day of Yoga on 21st June at 75 iconic locations in Australia to mark the 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence.

  • India is “very keen” to have Yoga Instructors from Australia as part of the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (Ind-Aus ECTA).
  • For the first time Australia has committed to provide work opportunity to the students with extended periods of Work Visas.
  • The International Day of Yoga is celebrated all over the world on June 21 every year.

  • Yoga is the symbol of India’s rich cultural heritage.
  • Yoga is a practice that brings about harmony between the body and the mind.
  • It gives physical power and provides mental balance and emotional stability to meet modern life challenges successfully.
  • It is a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India and aim to control and still the mind, recognizing a detached witness-consciousness untouched by the mind and mundane suffering.
  • There is a wide variety of schools of yoga, practices, and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, and traditional and modern yoga is practiced worldwide.
  • Yoga is first mentioned in the Rigveda, and is referred to in a number of the Upanishads
