- The Union government has recently approved the Journalist Welfare Scheme to provide financial assistance to the families of journalists who lost their lives during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
- The scheme was adopted based on the recommendations made by the Journalist Welfare Scheme (JWS) committee.
- The Committee was chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
- Under the Scheme, the Union government to provide financial relief to the families of 35 journalists who have lost their lives.
- The families will get financial assistance up to Rs 5 lakh.
- About 123 families of journalists who lost their lives owing to Covid-19 have received financial assistance under the scheme.
- Under the scheme, Journalists will also get the benefit of financial assistance in the event of accidents, disabilities, or serious medical conditions.
