Context: Poland is ready to deploy all its MIG-29 jets in Germany and put them at the disposal of the United States, and urges other NATO members that own planes of that type to do the same.

• This is done to facilitate the transfer of fighter aircraft to Ukraine from Poland as well as other NATO and Eastern European countries, after a plea from Ukrainian President.

About MIG 29 jets:

• It is a twin-engine jet fighter aircraft designed in the Soviet Union.
• Developed by the Mikoyan design bureau as an air superiority fighter during the 1970s.
• The MiG-29, along with the larger Sukhoi Su-27, was developed to counter new U.S. fighters such as the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle and the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon.
• The MiG-29 entered service with the Soviet Air Forces in 1982.
• During the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, MiG-29s were the primary fighter aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force.
