Context

  • The National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated every year on 14th December 2022.  The purpose is to showcase the achievements of the nation in energy efficiency and conservation.

Details

  • National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated every year on December 14. In order to illustrate how the nation has made strides in energy conservation and efficiency, the day is observed in the country. The day to raise awareness of the importance of energy conservation for the present as well as future generations.
  • To maximize energy efficiency, it is necessary to consume energy judiciously. In order to ensure that energy is conserved for future generations, it is necessary to use it efficiently.
  • Since 1991, National Energy Conservation Day has been celebrated on December 14.

What Is Energy Conservation?

  • Energy conservation is the practice of reducing the consumption of energy by living organisms. Energy is conserved to reduce the cost of consumption and to preserve the limited existing resources of energy. Energy can be conserved by using energy-efficient devices and other methods to consume energy and reduce the use of energy when there is no requirement. We know that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. It can only be transformed from one form to another. So, it is important to conserve energy.
  • There are two types of sources of energy, namely renewable sources of energy and non-renewable sources of energy. Non-renewable sources of energy include fossil fuels like coal and petroleum. Many electric power plants use fossil fuels to generate electricity. These are exhaustible sources of energy that cannot be produced at a faster rate as we need them. They cannot be used endlessly. The formation of fossil fuels takes millions of years. So we should conserve these energy sources for our present and future generations.

Need of Energy Conservation

  • Energy conservation is an idea and practice that focuses on saving our natural resources, especially those resources which are available in a limited amount. Non-renewable sources of energy are those that are consumed at a rate faster than that at which they are replenished.
  • These resources are widely used in the production of electricity by many electric power plants and in automobiles. Their availability is limited because they take millions of years to form. If we do not conserve energy and their resources, then soon they will get depleted. Therefore, it is advisable to use alternative sources of energy to save non-renewable energy sources and reduce the consumption of energy if possible. The following are the importance of energy conservation:
  • Energy conservation is necessary because it reduces the cost of consumption of energy. For example, when we reduce the use of electricity when not in use, then the cost per unit of energy also reduces. By using less electricity at home and using more energy-efficient appliances, we can reduce our electricity bills. That is how the conservation of electricity works.
  • Energy conservation helps in reducing the use of natural resources of energy like fossil fuels. For example, more amount of coal and petroleum is used to heat water and generate electricity in thermal power plants. If we save electrical energy, we save our natural resources, which are consumed in producing electrical energy.
  • Energy conservation reduces the waste which is released into the environment. It reduces unwanted carbon emissions into the atmosphere. For example, the burning of fossil fuels produces energy, and in this process, a lot of harmful gases are emitted into the air. It causes air pollution. Burning less amount of fuel reduces the unwanted contamination of the air.
  • Energy conservation helps in improving the quality of life. It also helps in reducing global warming and other pollutants.

National Energy Conservation Day 2022 celebration

  • Governments and organizations in India organize a number of energy conservation competitions to make national energy conservation campaigns more effective.
  • To emphasize the importance of energy conservation in all aspects of life, National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated among people.

The main attractions of the event will be:

  • National Energy Conservation Awards (NECA) 2022
  • National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards (NEEIA) 2022
  • National painting competition for school children 2022
  • Launch of ‘EV-Yatra portal’ and mobile app
  • Session on emerging new technologies in the area of energy efficiency

National Energy Conservation Award 2022

  • To raise awareness about energy efficiency and its conservation, the BEE, under the guidance of Ministry of Power, recognizes and encourages endeavours of industrial units, institutions, and establishments in reducing energy consumption by felicitating them with Energy Conservation Awards on the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, celebrated on 14thDecember every year.

National Energy Efficiency Innovation Awards (NEEIA) 2022

  • To recognize outstanding work and innovative minds of India in the area of Energy Efficiency, NEEIA awards were started in the year 2021. Applications for NEEIA 2022 are invited online from various categories viz. Category A: Professionals from the Industries, Building, and Transport sector and Category B: Students and Research Scholars.
  • The awards are evaluated based on Replicability, Affordability, Reliability, Impact on Energy Savings and Impact on Environment & Sustainability.

National Painting Competition 2022

  • To continually bring change in society towards conservation and efficient use of energy, the Ministry of Power has been organizing the National Painting Competition on Energy Conservation since 2005. The competition is held in three stages, namely, School, State and National Level.

Launch of ‘EV-YATRA PORTAL’ and Mobile App

  • Bureau of Energy Efficiency has developed a Mobile Application to facilitate in-vehicle navigation to the nearest public EV charger, a website to disseminate information on various central and state-level initiatives to promote e-mobility in the country, and a web-portal to enable CPOs to register their charging details securely into the National Online Database.
  • The Mobile application titled “EV Yatra” has been designed and developed to facilitate in-vehicle navigation to the nearest public EV charger. This Mobile application can be easily downloaded on both iPhone and Android smartphones from Google play store and Apple Store and installed conveniently.
