Context

The Indian Department of Telecom (DoT) has implemented a new system aimed at combating phone scams by helping users identify legitimate calls from banks, government agencies, and other trusted institutions.

Details

Key Features of the New System

  • Dedicated Phone Number Series:
    • 10-digit Numbers Starting with 160: A new phone number series starting with 160 has been introduced. These numbers will be used exclusively for service and transactional calls from trusted sources.
  • Unique Identifier Codes:
    • First Two Digits (AB): Represent the telecom circle (area) where the call originates. For example, "11" for Delhi and "22" for Mumbai.
    • Third Digit (C): Indicates the telecom operator (e.g., Airtel, Jio, Vodafone-Idea).
    • Last Three Digits (XXX): A unique identifier for the calling entity (e.g., a bank, government department).
  • Example Numbers:
    • A call from a government department in Delhi using Airtel might appear as 160111XXX.
    • A call from a bank using Jio could be 1601ABCXXX, where "C" denotes Jio's specific code.
  • Verification and Transparency:
    • Telecom Service Providers (TSPs): TSPs are responsible for verifying entities requesting a 160 series number. They must ensure that these numbers are used only for legitimate service and transactional calls.

Benefits

  • Increased Caller Identification: This system provides more information about incoming calls, helping users distinguish between legitimate and potential scam calls.
  • Enhanced Security: By identifying the source and authenticity of calls, users are better protected against scams.
  • Awareness and Caution: Users are advised to be cautious of calls that do not follow this format, especially those asking for personal or financial information.
