Private units voice concern over imports of small arms

- Domestic small arms manufacturers have expressed concern over continuing imports.
- Recently, Army took a decision to order another 72,400 assault rifles from Sig Sauer of the U.S.
Industries comment:
- Can now make small arms with over 50% indigenous content
- Can match the price and timelines.
- Asking to give domestic companies the same level playing field as foreign companies.
Official Comment:
- Indian companies are not considered for deals through Fast Track Procurement (FTP), which is limited to foreign vendors currently.
- Indian Industry case can also be taken up as suo moto case under the procurement process.
Development:
- In the last few years, many private players have set up companies or invested in production facility to make the small arms.
- They have tied up with the foreign firms to support the Make in India.
