Starlink to provide Internet globally
Context
- SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the Starlink satellite internet service will cover everywhere in the world except polar regions by August.
What is Starlink?
- Starlink is a satellite internet constellation being constructed by SpaceX providing satellite Internet access.
- The constellation will consist of thousands of mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), which communicate with designated ground transceivers.
- SpaceX can launch up to 60 satellites in one go.
- It aims to deploy 1,584 of 260 kg spacecraft to provide near-global service by late 2021 or 2022.
Space X
- Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) is an American aerospace manufacturer, space transportation services and communications company.
- It was founded in 2002 with the goal of reducing space transportation costs to enable the colonization of Mars.
- SpaceX manufactures the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles, several rocket engines, Dragon cargo, crew spacecraft and Starlink communications satellites.
