Tiger deaths

Context: Tiger deaths increased to 127 last year from 106 deaths in the previous year. The number of tiger deaths in 2019 stood at 96.
Reasons for tiger death include:
- old age
- infighting among tigers
- snaring, drowning, road, rail hits
- electrocution and poaching.
Other facts:
- Average life span of the tigers in the wild is generally 10-12 years.
- India is the largest tiger range country in the world and has now more than 75 per cent of the global tiger population.
Royal Bengal Tiger:
- It forms a specific population of the Pantheratigristigris subspecies that is native to the Indian subcontinent.
- Threats: poaching, loss and fragmentation of habitat.
- Conservation status:
- IUCN Status: Endangered
- Protected under schedule 1 of Wildlife Protection Act.
