World Sanskrit Day

Context

  • The Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his wishes on the occasion of World Sanskrit Day and shared his greetings with the people in Sanskrit.
  • World Sanskrit Day, also known as Vishvasamskritadinam, is an annual event aimed to promote revival and maintenance of Sanskrit.

 

Key Facts

  • Sanskrit belongs to the Indo-European family of languages.
  • Sanskrit is the 2nd official language of Uttarakhand.
  • Sanskrit is one of the 6 classical languages of India.

 

Why is there a need for revival of Sanskrit?

  • Sanskrit is the most accurate language phonetically. Sanskrit vocabulary uses 49 sounds.
  • It is the earliest form of Sanskrit language was Vedic Sanskrit that came approximately around 1500B.C
  • According to a report given by the NASA scientist, Rick Briggs, Sanskrit is one of the most suitable languages for the computers and programming.
  • A total of 17 countries including the US have Universities that are dedicated completely to Sanskrit and their sole purpose is research on the subject.
  • Despite its significance, Sanskrit got marginalized in public domain in India.
  • It was the growth of vernaculars in the medieval ages that dented Sanskrit's prospects.
  • 'Sanskrit Commission' which was set up by the Government of India, in its 1957 report specifically pointed out that Sanskrit is one of the greatest languages of the world and it is the classical language par excellence not only of India but of a good part of Asia as well.
  • All our texts, documents and scriptures are in Sanskrit; losing the language would be losing our roots.
